Inverter compressor motor overheat/lock
What does Daikin E5 mean?
The E5 code covers inverter compressor overheat and mechanical lock. The outdoor PCB has detected either an over-temperature signal from the compressor top thermistor or a motor-lock condition from the inverter driver — the compressor is not rotating correctly under commanded current. Root causes split across refrigerant-side faults that starve the suction gas used for motor cooling and electrical faults that prevent the rotor from turning.
Symptoms
- Compressor starts then stops within seconds or minutes
- E5 appears repeatedly after each restart attempt
- Compressor body hot to the touch near the top dome
- Suction line warmer than normal under cooling load
- Audible click of contactor without compressor runup
Common causes
- Refrigerant shortage reducing suction-gas motor cooling
- Four-way reversing valve leaking internally
- Inverter compressor mechanical lock or seized bearing
- Defective inverter PCB power stage
- Defective compressor top thermistor or harness
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Let the compressor cool fully
Isolate power and allow the compressor shell to reach ambient. Retry — a one-off overheat event may clear with time.

Gauge the system
Connect a manifold and assess charge, superheat, and subcooling against the charging chart. Low charge starves the motor of cooling vapor.

Inspect the reversing valve
Feel the four lines of the four-way valve with the system running. Equal temperatures on suction and discharge indicate internal bypass.

Check compressor winding resistance
Isolate power, discharge the DC bus, and measure U-V, V-W, U-W resistance at the compressor terminals. Unequal or shorted windings condemn the compressor.

Test the overheat thermistor
Disconnect the compressor top thermistor and read resistance at ambient against the service-manual table.
- 06
Replace the inverter PCB or compressor
If windings and thermistor check good, the inverter driver stage is likely failed. Persistent lock with healthy drive indicates compressor replacement.

Call a licensed technician for any E5 that does not clear with a cool-down retry. Diagnosing reversing-valve leakage, inverter power-stage failure, and compressor lock requires discharge-temperature probes, clamp-on ammeters, and oscilloscope-capable service tools. Compressor replacement means recovery, triple-evacuation, fresh filter-drier, and weighed recharge — all certified work. DC-bus voltages in the inverter box are lethal until bled, so treat the outdoor control panel as hot even after isolation.
