Honeywell E01 Error Code

Wi-Fi setup error - router not found

What does Honeywell E01 mean?

Error E01 appears during Wi-Fi setup when the thermostat cannot detect the router — most commonly because the router lost power mid-setup or is out of wireless range. The thermostat broadcasts a probe for the selected SSID and receives no response, causing the setup to fail at the router-discovery stage. This code applies to the Honeywell FocusPRO Wi-Fi TH6000 series and RTH6500 series thermostats.

Symptoms

  • Display shows E01 after the thermostat begins scanning for the Wi-Fi network.
  • Setup process stalls and does not advance past the router-search step.
  • No Wi-Fi signal bars or network name confirmation appears on the thermostat screen.
  • Thermostat cannot be located by the Honeywell Home app during registration.

Common causes

  • Router lost power or rebooted during the Wi-Fi setup process.
  • Router is powered off or in a fault state at the time of setup.
  • Thermostat is out of range of the wireless router signal.
  • Router is broadcasting only on 5 GHz — these thermostat models require a 2.4 GHz band.
  • Hidden SSID network selected but router is not advertising that network correctly.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Confirm the router has power and is running

Check that your router's power and Wi-Fi indicator LEDs are on and stable before starting or retrying thermostat setup. If any lights are off or blinking abnormally, reboot the router and wait for it to fully reconnect before proceeding.

  2. Move closer to the router or reposition the thermostat

If the thermostat is far from the router or separated by thick walls, temporarily bring a portable access point or router closer to confirm signal strength is the issue. Honeywell recommends the thermostat be within 30 feet of the router during initial setup.

  3. Verify the router is broadcasting on 2.4 GHz

Log into your router's admin panel and confirm a 2.4 GHz SSID is enabled. These thermostat models do not support 5 GHz networks. If your router uses band-steering under a single SSID, temporarily split the bands and select the explicit 2.4 GHz SSID on the thermostat.

  4. Restart the Wi-Fi setup on the thermostat

Navigate to Menu > Wi-Fi Setup on the thermostat, select your 2.4 GHz network SSID, and proceed through the setup wizard. If you are connecting to a hidden network, confirm the router is actively broadcasting before choosing the manual-entry option.

  5. Power-cycle the thermostat

Remove the thermostat from its wallplate for 10 seconds, then reattach it. This clears the setup state and allows a fresh connection attempt. Repeat the Wi-Fi setup from the beginning.

When to call a professional

E01 is a setup-phase connectivity issue that does not require an HVAC technician. If the error persists after confirming the router is powered, within range, and broadcasting on 2.4 GHz, the thermostat's wireless radio may be defective. Contact Honeywell Home customer support at 1-800-633-3991 or consult a licensed HVAC technician for hardware evaluation.
