Ruud 05 Error Code

Air intake or vent exhaust opening may be blocked

Source: hvac/ruud/c327d936__RUD-rutgh-84dvln-2_pm.pdf

What does Ruud 05 mean?

On Ruud RUTGH condensing tankless water heaters, error code 05 means the air intake or the vent exhaust opening may be blocked. The unit needs clear combustion air in and clear flue-gas exhaust out; when the controller detects restricted airflow it displays 05 so the obstruction can be cleared before combustion is affected.

Symptoms

  • 05 shown on the remote control LED display
  • Burner fails to fire or shuts down
  • No or interrupted hot water
  • Visible debris, snow, or obstruction at the intake or vent terminal

Common causes

  • Air intake opening blocked or lacking clearance
  • Vent exhaust terminal blocked by debris, snow, or nests
  • Insufficient clearance around the air intake (12 in. / 30 cm required)

Diagnostic steps

  1. Inspect the air intake and vent terminal

Check the air intake and the vent exhaust opening for any blockage such as debris, snow, leaves, or nests.

  2. Remove any blockage and restore clearance

Remove any obstruction. The manual specifies the air intake requires 12 in. (30 cm) of clearance, so make sure nothing is too close to the opening.

  3. Restart and recheck the display

Turn off the faucets, turn the heater off, then turn on a hot water faucet and recheck the display. If it persists, unplug for about 30 seconds, plug back in, restart, and recheck.

  4. Contact a technician if the code remains

If 05 is still shown after clearing the openings and power-cycling, note the code and call for service assistance.

When to call a professional

If you cannot find or safely clear the blockage, or the code returns after clearing the intake and vent, call a dealer or qualified service technician. Vent and combustion-air systems are safety-critical: the manual warns that leaking or improperly operating venting can lead to carbon monoxide hazards, and that repairs to burners, vent connectors, and safety devices must be left to a qualified service technician.
