What does Sveba-Dahlen oSF mean?

The SD-180's Schneider frequency converter has detected that the incoming mains voltage has exceeded its safe operating threshold or that significant electrical disturbances are present on the grid supply network. The converter's internal protection circuit trips to prevent damage to the drive and connected motor components when the supply voltage rises above acceptable limits.

Symptoms

  • Frequency converter display shows 'oSF' and the oven stops mid-cycle
  • Conveyor or deck drive motor shuts down unexpectedly without mechanical obstruction
  • Fault resets momentarily but recurs during peak grid load periods
  • Control panel indicates a converter trip with no temperature-related warnings present
  • Visible flicker or instability in oven lighting coinciding with the fault

Common causes

  • Excessive mains supply voltage exceeding the converter's rated input range
  • Voltage spikes or transients on the grid supply network (e.g., from nearby heavy industrial loads)

Diagnostic steps

  1. 01

    Measure incoming mains voltage

    Using a true-RMS multimeter, measure all phases of the mains supply at the oven's isolator with the oven under normal load. Confirm the voltage is within the SD-180's specified input range and note any fluctuation.

  2. 02

    Check for grid-side transients

    Install a power quality analyser or data logger on the supply for at least one full working day. Look for voltage spikes, sags, or harmonic distortion that coincide with the oSF trip events.

    Inspect surge protection devices

    Locate any surge protection devices (SPDs) or varistors installed upstream of the SD-180 converter and verify they are intact and have not sacrificed. Replace any blown or degraded SPDs before re-energising.

    Verify supply circuit sizing and isolation

    Confirm the SD-180 is supplied from a dedicated circuit sized per Sveba-Dahlen's installation specification. Sharing circuits with high-inductive loads such as compressors or welders can introduce the disturbances that trigger oSF.

    Clear the fault and perform a supervised restart
