What does York 9 Flashes mean?

Nine flashes is an indoor airflow failure: the limit switch input (P1-9) lost 24 VAC for more than six minutes while 24 VAC was present at the W1 heat input (P2-3). The prolonged open limit tells the control the main blower has likely failed to move enough air. The gas valve relay opens so gas operation stops while the inducer relay closes to run the inducer. The code resets by cycling 24 VAC power.

Symptoms

  • No heat; gas burners stay off
  • Inducer continues to run while the limit is open
  • ICB flashes a counted burst of 9 on the LED
  • Little or no air movement from the supply registers

Common causes

  • Failed or non-rotating indoor blower motor
  • Severely dirty filters, indoor coil, or blower wheel
  • Slipping or broken blower belt, or blown blower fuses
  • Blocked or restrictive ductwork
  • Limit switch failed open or open limit-circuit wiring

Diagnostic steps

  1. Verify blower operation

Confirm the blower motor runs with correct rotation, the blower fuses are intact, and the contactor and motor are operable.

  2. Restore airflow

Clean the filters, indoor coil, and blower wheel and confirm indoor air volume meets at least the minimum required for the heat section.

  3. Check the blower drive

Verify the blower belt is intact, properly maintained, and adjusted, and that the wheel turns freely.

  4. Inspect the ductwork

Confirm the ducting is free of blockages and not unduly restrictive.

  5. Check the limit circuit

Verify the main and auxiliary limit switches are not failed open and that their wiring is intact, then cycle power to reset.

When to call a professional

A nine-flash hard lockout means the control believes the blower failed — a condition that can let the heat exchanger overheat. If the blower does not run or the code returns after restoring airflow, call a licensed HVAC technician to diagnose the motor, capacitor, and control circuit. Because sustained overheating can damage the heat exchanger, a professional should confirm it is sound before the furnace is returned to service.
