Alto-Shaam E35 Error Code

Venting error - vent switch misalignment

What does Alto-Shaam E35 mean?

E35 is triggered when the vent switch reads a state that conflicts with the expected position — either reading open when it should be closed, or closed when it should be open. The vent damper controls steam exhaust and cavity pressure; a misaligned or failed switch means the control cannot confirm the vent is in the correct position for the active cooking mode.

Symptoms

  • Oven halts and displays E35 at the start of or during a cooking cycle.
  • Steam venting may be abnormal — either not venting at all or venting continuously.
  • Error may be intermittent if the cam or switch is borderline misaligned.
  • Vent motor may be heard cycling repeatedly before the fault locks out.

Common causes

  • Motor cam misaligned relative to the vent switch actuator.
  • Micro switch connection loose or disconnected from the wiring harness.
  • Faulty vent micro switch with worn or damaged contacts.
  • Vent motor failed in a position where the cam does not actuate the switch correctly.
  • Debris or grease buildup preventing the vent flap from reaching its full travel.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Inspect vent damper mechanical travel

With power off, manually actuate the vent damper through its full range. Confirm the damper moves freely from fully open to fully closed without binding. Any obstruction from grease or debris should be cleaned before electrical diagnosis.

  2. Check vent switch wiring connections

Locate the micro switch on the vent assembly and verify its wiring harness connectors are fully seated. A loose spade terminal on the micro switch is a common cause of an intermittent E35.

  3. Test micro switch continuity in both positions

With power off and a multimeter set to continuity, manually depress the micro switch actuator and release it. Confirm the switch changes state correctly — a switch that reads the same in both positions has failed and requires replacement.

  4. Inspect and adjust the motor cam alignment

Observe the cam position relative to the micro switch actuator at both the fully open and fully closed damper positions. If the cam does not actuate the switch at the correct point in its travel, loosen the cam set screw and adjust the position to achieve correct actuation.

  5. Test vent motor operation

Verify the vent motor drives the cam through its full travel on command. A motor that stalls or reverses prematurely will leave the cam in a position that cannot actuate the switch correctly.

When to call a professional

If the vent motor has failed or the micro switch requires replacement, contact an authorized Alto-Shaam technician. Cam alignment requires precise adjustment to the manufacturer's specification; incorrect alignment will cause recurring E35 faults.
