Quick Answer

Alto-Shaam (Wisconsin) builds Halo Heat cook-and-hold cabinets, Combitherm combi ovens (CT PROformance, VHE / VMC ESi), and Vector Multi-Cook H-Series. Combitherm controls display E-prefixed codes: E01 low water, E02 control-compartment hot, E03 fan-motor, E11 / E13 cavity / boiler over-temperature, E-20 / E-21 probe faults, E35 vent switch, E88 gas ignition, E92 / E96 board communication. Service mode is password-gated.

What error codes does Alto-Shaam display?

E01

Low water in boiler — the level probe B1 was not satisfied within 5 minutes after the water solenoid Y1 opened. Check water supply, inlet pressure (20–90 PSI), inline strainer, hose for kinks, solenoid Y1 operation, and B1 probe for scale.

E02

Control-compartment over-temperature (above 176 °F / 80 °C). Almost always a ventilation problem — failed cooling fan, blocked louver vents, insufficient install clearance, or high ambient kitchen temperature.

E03

Convection fan failed to rotate within 60 seconds of command — detected by the Hall Effect sensor on the motor. Check for jammed fan wheel, tripped thermal overload, faulty Hall sensor, loose harness, or a failed run-capacitor on single-phase motors.

E05

VFD CAN-bus communication timeout — the Variable Frequency Drive did not respond on the serial interface. Re-seat the CAN harness, observe the VFD status LED, verify input voltage, and test 60-ohm bus termination.

E07

VFD internal fault flagged by the green status LED flashing rather than steady. Count the flash pattern (Alto-Shaam VFDs use coded flash sequences for overcurrent / overvoltage / motor-speed deviation), then check blower-motor mechanical resistance and VFD output wiring.

E11

Convection cavity over-temperature — cavity exceeded 572 °F (300 °C) for 25+ consecutive seconds. Indicates a runaway heating condition: stuck heating contactor, failed cavity probe B-2 reading low, defective high-limit thermostat, or a control-board relay failure. Take the unit out of service.

E13

Boiler over-temperature — boiler probe B-4 read above 248 °F (120 °C) for 25+ seconds. Verify water supply and boiler fill, descale, inspect the steam-element contactor for welded contacts, and confirm correct X-3 / B-4 jumper position on ESi models.

E20

Single-point core (product) probe defective — control reads an out-of-range signal (open or short). Inspect cable for kinks at the door bend point, clean the cavity receptacle, ohm the probe, and substitute a known-good probe to isolate.

E35

Vent-switch misalignment — switch reads a state that conflicts with the expected vent damper position. Manually actuate the damper for free travel, check micro-switch wiring, test switch state change, and adjust cam alignment to the service-manual specification.

E96

Communication fault between the main control board and the operating (UI) module — board-to-board serial link broken. Re-seat the data harness, inspect for pinched / melted insulation, verify control-board supply voltage, and substitute a known-good board to isolate which side failed.
