Lincoln PROBE FAIL Error Code

Thermocouple temperature probe has failed or become disconnected from the oven control.

What does Lincoln PROBE FAIL mean?

On Lincoln Impinger II Advantage Digital ovens, the oven control reads cavity temperature from a thermocouple. When the control cannot read a valid signal, it displays PROBE FAIL, indicating the thermocouple has failed or become disconnected. With no usable temperature signal the control will not energize the heat output, so the oven stops heating.

Symptoms

  • Display reads "PROBE FAIL"
  • Oven does not heat or fails to reach set temperature
  • No temperature reading shown on the control
  • No voltage output from the control to the temperature regulation valve or heater relay

Common causes

  • Thermocouple disconnected from the oven control
  • Failed (open or out-of-spec) thermocouple
  • Loose or damaged thermocouple connection
  • Failed oven control board misreading a good thermocouple

Diagnostic steps

  1. Confirm the control is powered

Check for 24VAC supply to the oven control. If absent, trace back to the control transformer. If 24VAC is present but the display is blank, replace the oven control before chasing a probe fault.

  2. Check the thermocouple connection

Make sure the thermocouple is securely connected to the oven control. A loose or partially seated connection can trigger PROBE FAIL on its own.

  3. Measure thermocouple resistance

Disconnect the thermocouple from the control and measure its resistance — it should read approximately 11Ω. If the reading is not achieved, replace the thermocouple.

  4. Verify the thermocouple millivolt output

With power on and the thermocouple attached, measure its DC millivolt output and compare against the thermocouple chart in the manual's Removal section. If readings are off, replace the thermocouple.

  5. Replace the oven control if the probe checks good

If the thermocouple resistance and millivolt readings are correct but the control still reports a thermocouple failure, replace the oven control.

When to call a professional

Diagnosing PROBE FAIL means measuring 24VAC control supply, thermocouple resistance, and DC millivolt output inside an energized control box, then comparing values against the manufacturer's thermocouple chart. If a quick connection check does not clear the fault, have a qualified Lincoln service technician complete the electrical measurements and replace the thermocouple or oven control, since an incorrect probe can leave the oven unable to regulate temperature safely.
