Manitowoc E28
AuCS fault - automatic cleaning system not detected
What does Manitowoc E28 mean?
E28 is logged by the Manitowoc Indigo control when the operator selects the AuCS (Automatic Cleaning System) clean option from the menu and the control board cannot detect the AuCS board on the internal communication bus. The AuCS is an optional accessory that automates the clean-and-sanitize cycle on a programmed schedule. E28 is an event-log entry only — it does not generate an active alarm, does not shut down ice production, and does not require a manual reset. The machine continues producing ice normally.
Symptoms
- E28 appears in the Indigo event log when the AuCS clean function is selected.
- No active alarm or shutdown accompanies E28 — ice production continues unaffected.
- The AuCS clean cycle does not execute when E28 is logged.
- Manual clean-and-sanitize mode still works; only the AuCS-initiated automatic cycle is affected.
Common causes
- AuCS board is not installed — E28 is expected if the machine does not have the AuCS accessory.
- AuCS board communication cable is disconnected or unplugged from the Indigo control board.
- AuCS board power connector is loose or unplugged, preventing the board from responding.
- AuCS board has failed internally and no longer communicates on the bus.
- AuCS menu option was selected in error on a machine not equipped with the accessory.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Confirm whether AuCS is installed
Check whether the AuCS accessory board is physically present inside the ice machine. If the machine was never equipped with AuCS, E28 is expected whenever the AuCS menu option is selected and no action is required.
- 02
Inspect the AuCS board communication cable
If AuCS is installed, locate the communication cable between the AuCS board and the Indigo control board. Verify both ends are fully seated. A loose connector is the most common cause of E28 on equipped machines.
- 03
Check AuCS board power connections
Verify the AuCS board power connector is fully plugged in and the supply voltage at the board header matches the specified level per the AuCS installation manual.
- 04
Verify Indigo firmware supports AuCS
Confirm the Indigo control firmware version supports the installed AuCS variant. An incompatible firmware version can prevent AuCS detection even when the hardware is properly connected.
- 05
Replace the AuCS board if fault persists
If wiring and power are confirmed good but E28 continues to log, the AuCS board has likely failed. Replace with the correct Manitowoc AuCS board for the machine model and test by initiating an AuCS-triggered clean cycle.

When to call a professional
E28 is a low-severity event-log entry and does not require urgent service. If the machine is equipped with AuCS and automated cleaning is not executing, a factory-trained technician should inspect the board communication and power circuits, confirm firmware compatibility, and replace the AuCS board if needed. Allowing automated cleaning to lapse degrades water quality and ice purity over time.
