What does Manitowoc E38 mean?

E38 is exclusive to Manitowoc Indigo NXT models and indicates a UI communication event — the user interface display board is not communicating with the main control board. On NXT machines, the touchscreen UI is a separate board connected to the main control via an internal communication bus. When the bus communication is interrupted or fails, E38 is logged. The machine may halt production pending communication restoration.

Symptoms

• E38 appears in the event log on an Indigo NXT model.
• Touchscreen UI is blank, frozen, or shows no response to input.
• Main control board is powered but the display does not reflect current machine state.
• Machine halts or behaves erratically because it cannot relay UI commands to the control.

Common causes

• Loose communication cable or connector between the UI board and main control board.
• Failed UI display board unable to communicate on the internal bus.
• Main control board communication port failure.
• Damaged inter-board wiring harness.
• Moisture or contamination on the UI board connector.

Diagnostic steps

1. 01

   Power cycle the machine

   Disconnect power for 60 seconds and restore. A transient communication fault may clear after a full restart. If E38 does not return, monitor for recurrence.

   Inspect the UI-to-control board communication cable

   Power off the machine and access the inter-board wiring harness connecting the UI board to the main control board. Reseat connectors at both ends firmly. Check for bent pins or corrosion.

   Inspect for moisture on the UI board

   Check the UI board connector and surrounding area for moisture or condensation. Dry thoroughly and apply electrical contact cleaner to the connector pins before reassembly.

   Test UI board power supply

   Confirm the UI board is receiving the correct supply voltage from the main control board. No voltage at the UI board input points to a failed supply rail on the main board, not the UI board.

5. 05

   Replace the UI display board

   If communication cable and power supply are confirmed good but the UI remains unresponsive, the UI board has failed. Replace with the Manitowoc-specified NXT UI board for the model.

When to call a professional

If UI board replacement does not resolve E38, the main control board communication port is faulty. Both boards may need replacement in a failed communication circuit — a factory-trained technician should confirm the failure path before ordering parts.
