What does Raypak IGNITION mean?

The controller has registered an ignition fault. On a call for heat the igniter glows after the pre-purge delay and the main valve opens for a trial for ignition; the system tries up to three times (once on the optional single-try module) and, if flame is not sensed, lockout commences. The Error Display lists IGNITION with the instruction to reset the control by pressing and releasing RESET.

Symptoms

• IGNITION shown as the active error on the display
• Burner attempts ignition then locks out
• No flame established after the trial-for-ignition attempts
• Red fault LED (3 flashes indicates ignition lockout on the PIM)

Common causes

• Insufficient or interrupted gas supply
• Faulty igniter / HSI element
• Transformer or wiring problem to the ignition circuit
• Failed ignition control module

Diagnostic steps

1. 01

   Check the gas supply

   Per the PIM 3-flash ignition lockout guidance, verify the gas supply is on and at adequate pressure to the heater.

   Check transformer, igniters, and wiring

   Inspect the transformer, igniters, and ignition-circuit wiring for faults or loose connections.

   Inspect the HSI element

   Check the hot surface igniter element and replace as necessary per the manual.

   Reset and recycle power

   Press the reset button on the PIM/membrane switch, recycle power, and clear the fault with the RESET button on the user interface.

5. 05

   Observe the ignition sequence

   Confirm the burner lights within the trial-for-ignition attempts and runs without re-locking out.

When to call a professional

Repeated ignition lockouts involve the gas train, igniters, and the flame-safeguard circuit, where improper work risks dangerous operation. The manual requires verifying gas is off and all electrical power is disconnected before servicing these components. If the fault persists after checking gas supply, or you are not equipped to test the igniter and ignition control safely, call a qualified Raypak service technician.
