What does Weil McLain F15 mean?

F15 indicates a fan (blower/inducer) speed fault. The controller measures the tachometric feedback from the fan and detects a frequency outside the normal operating range — either below 20 Hz or above 295 Hz for more than 15 seconds. Heat demand is disabled. If fan speed returns to the normal range, the fault clears automatically.

Symptoms

• Boiler displays F15 and fails to ignite.
• Fan runs at an abnormally high or low speed, or fails to start.
• Alert code A05 appears if F15 persists for one consecutive hour.
• Boiler attempts to start but shuts down before ignition sequence completes.

Common causes

• Loss of 120V power supply to the fan motor.
• Tachometric (speed feedback) signal wire interrupted or disconnected.
• Fan motor bearing failure causing it to run outside the speed range.
• Condensate trap blocked, increasing back-pressure and preventing normal fan operation.
• 8-pin connector wiring to the fan control loose or damaged.

Diagnostic steps

1. 01

   Verify 120V power to the fan

   With power off, check the fan wiring harness for loose or burnt connections. Restore power and confirm the fan receives correct voltage during a call for heat.

   Inspect the 8-pin fan connector

   Locate the 8-pin connector at the control board. Unplug and re-seat it firmly, inspecting for bent pins or corrosion that would interrupt the tachometric signal.

3. 03

   Check and clean the condensate trap

   Remove the condensate trap and inspect for blockage or debris. A blocked trap increases flue back-pressure and can slow the fan. Clean and reinstall the trap, ensuring the drain hose is not looped.

   Test fan rotation manually

   With power off, spin the fan blade by hand to check for bearing resistance or grinding. A stiff or noisy bearing indicates the fan motor requires replacement.

5. 05

   Inspect tachometric signal wiring

   Trace the speed feedback wire from the fan to the control board. Repair any breaks, shorts, or loose terminals that would prevent the controller from reading fan speed.
