What does Bell and Gossett E30 mean?

E30 indicates a multi-pump protocol incompatibility error on the e-90E Smart Pump. When two or more e-90E pumps are connected in a multi-pump system (MSE or MSY mode), they communicate via the RS-485 multi-pump bus. E30 triggers when the pumps detect they are running different firmware versions, making their communication protocols incompatible.

Symptoms

  • Pump stops and displays E30 on the control panel.
  • STATUS LED illuminates red steady.
  • Fault occurs only in MSE or MSY multi-pump configurations.
  • One or more pumps in the system may display E30 simultaneously.

Common causes

  • Pumps in the multi-pump group are running different firmware versions.
  • A pump was replaced with a unit from a different production batch with updated firmware.
  • Firmware update applied to only some pumps in the group.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Check firmware version on each pump

Access parameter P17 on each pump in the multi-pump group. P17 displays the control board software version. Record the version on each unit to identify any mismatch.

  2. Compare versions and identify the outlier

If one pump shows a different P17 version from the others, that unit is the source of the incompatibility. A replacement pump from a newer production batch is the most common cause.

  3. Contact Xylem for firmware alignment

E30 requires all pumps in the group to run the same firmware. Contact Xylem or an Authorized Distributor to obtain a firmware update or downgrade to align all units to a common compatible version. Do not attempt firmware updates without manufacturer guidance.

  4. Verify multi-pump address settings

While awaiting firmware resolution, confirm parameter P55 is set to a unique address (1, 2, or 3) on each pump, and P56 matches the total number of pumps in the group. Address conflicts can mask E30 during diagnosis.

When to call a professional

Contact Xylem or an Authorized Distributor directly for E30 — firmware version management on multi-pump systems is not a field-serviceable task. Applying incorrect firmware can brick a pump controller. An authorized technician will coordinate the correct update procedure for all units in the group.
