Overcurrent protection of compressor

Source: Gree/Gree_etac-iii-r32-service-manual-a_HVAC.pdf

What does Gree E5 mean?

E5 is an overcurrent protection of the compressor. The board has measured excessive current and shuts the compressor down to protect it. The compressor, electric heating and outdoor fan stop while the indoor fan keeps running, and the unit displays E5.

Symptoms

  • Display shows E5
  • Compressor, electric heating and outdoor fan stop while the indoor fan runs
  • Trips during or shortly after compressor start
  • Loss of cooling/heating

Common causes

  • Compressor is blocked
  • Start-up current of the compressor is too big
  • Operating voltage of the unit is too low

Diagnostic steps

  1. Check supply voltage

Measure the unit's operating voltage; if it is too low, correct the supply, since low voltage drives high current and triggers E5.

  2. Check the compressor for blockage

Confirm the compressor is not mechanically blocked, which raises current draw.

  3. Check start-up current

Verify the compressor start-up current is not abnormally large.

When to call a professional

Compressor overcurrent points at the compressor, its starting components, or the power supply — all of which involve high current and line voltage. Measuring compressor current and judging a blocked or failing compressor is technician work. If supply voltage looks fine and E5 returns, have a licensed HVAC pro test the compressor circuit.
