Low-temperature prevention protection — electric heating starts up

Source: Gree/Gree_etac-iii-r32-service-manual-a_HVAC.pdf

What does Gree FP mean?

FP is a low-temperature prevention protection. When ambient temperature is low (or the temperature sensor resistance reads abnormal), the unit starts up electric heating operation to keep the system warm. The display shows FP while this low-temperature protection is active.

Symptoms

  • Display shows FP
  • Electric heating operation starts up
  • Occurs in cold conditions
  • Unit behaves protectively rather than running a normal cooling/heating cycle

Common causes

  • Ambient temperature is low
  • Resistance value of the temperature sensor is abnormal

Diagnostic steps

  1. Note that FP triggers electric heating

FP starts electric heating operation as a low-temperature protection; in genuinely cold conditions this is the unit protecting itself.

  2. Check the ambient temperature

Confirm whether the surrounding temperature is genuinely low, which is a valid reason for FP to appear.

  3. Check the temperature sensor

Verify the temperature sensor's resistance is normal against the manual's resistance table — an abnormal reading can also raise FP.

  4. Replace a faulty sensor

If the sensor reads out of range, replace it with one of the same model so the board reads temperature correctly.

When to call a professional

If FP appears in clearly cold weather it is normal protection. But if it shows up in mild conditions, the temperature sensor is likely off and should be checked against the resistance table with a meter. Confirming and replacing the sensor inside the powered unit is best left to a licensed HVAC technician if you are unsure.
