Diagnostic steps

  1. Remove the overflow

User check: make sure the overflow has been removed so the tank can drain.

  2. Check the drain pipe

User check: inspect the drain pipe for bends, chokes or clogs and clear any obstruction.

  3. Technician: check filter and drain pump

Technician checks: filter clogged, drain pipe clogged, drain pump plugs damaged, drain pump damaged.

  4. Technician: check the RL1 relay

Technician check: inspect the circuit board RL1 relay for damage, which can prevent the drain pump from running.

When to call a professional

First confirm the overflow is removed and the drain pipe is clear and not kinked — these are the operator checks. If the tank still will not empty, the manual moves to technician checks: a clogged filter, a damaged drain pump or its plugs, and the RL1 relay on the circuit board. Diagnosing or replacing the drain pump and board relay is technician work, so call qualified service.
