What does Weil McLain F20 mean?

F20 is a warning indicating the central heating system water pressure is approaching the low-pressure threshold — it is higher than the low-pressure switch trip point but below the nominal operating level. This is a warning only; heating demand is not disabled. The boiler continues to operate normally. Whether F20 is displayed is controlled by parameter b15 (Fault F20 function — disabled by default).

Symptoms

  • F20 warning displayed on the control module LCD.
  • System pressure gauge shows pressure trending downward toward the low range.
  • Boiler continues heating normally — no interruption in operation.
  • F20 is a precursor warning before F37 (low pressure lockout) occurs if left unaddressed.

Common causes

  • Gradual water loss from a slow system leak.
  • Automatic fill valve not keeping up with minor pressure losses.
  • Parameter b15 enabled, activating F20 display for near-low pressure monitoring.
  • Expansion tank charge low, causing pressure to fall after cooling.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Check system pressure

Read the boiler pressure/temperature gauge. F20 appears when pressure is above the low-pressure switch cutoff but below nominal. Refill the system to 12–15 psi if needed.

  2. Inspect for slow leaks

Examine all piping joints, circulators, zone valves, and fittings for minor seepage or moisture staining. Even a pinhole leak will trigger F20 over time.

  3. Check the automatic fill valve

Verify the automatic fill valve is operational. If it is failing to maintain pressure, service or replace it before F37 lockout occurs.

  4. Check expansion tank pre-charge

Isolate and check the expansion tank air pre-charge. A low or waterlogged tank causes erratic pressure swings that can trigger F20.

  5. Monitor and address before F37 occurs

F20 is an early warning. Address the pressure issue promptly — if pressure continues to fall, F37 will trip the boiler off entirely.

When to call a professional

Call a licensed technician if the source of the pressure drop cannot be identified, the fill valve requires service, or the expansion tank needs replacement. A persistent F20 that escalates to F37 indicates an active system leak requiring pressure testing.
