What does Eliwell E7 mean?

E7 signals a fault on probe Pb7 in the Eliwell RTX-600 series. As with other probe alarms in this family, E7 activates when the Pb7 input measures values outside the valid operating range or detects an open or short circuit on the probe. The alarm icon remains on continuously and the affected control functions fall back to default behaviour.

Symptoms

  • Display shows 'E7' with the alarm icon permanently on.
  • Pb7 temperature value is unavailable on the controller.
  • Alarm logged in the ALr folder.
  • Buzzer activates if fitted and enabled.
  • Control logic relying on Pb7 reverts to time-based or fixed-parameter operation.

Common causes

  • Pb7 probe cable open-circuit (broken wire, loose terminal).
  • Pb7 probe short-circuited.
  • Probe type configuration mismatch on the Pb7 input channel.
  • Temperature being measured is outside the probe's valid range.
  • Probe connector corroded or pulled from terminal block.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Inspect Pb7 wiring at terminal block and probe

Power down and examine both ends of the Pb7 wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, or physical damage to the cable.

  2. Check probe type parameter for Pb7

In the programming menu, verify the probe type setting for Pb7 matches the installed probe (NTC or PTC). Power-cycle after correcting.

  3. Test probe resistance

Disconnect Pb7 leads and measure resistance. A healthy NTC probe reads approximately 10 kΩ at 25 °C. Open or zero resistance confirms a failed probe.

  4. Replace Pb7 probe

Install a new probe matching the original specification. NTC probes are non-polarised; keep the extension cable segregated from power conductors.

  5. Restore power and verify alarm clearance

Power up the controller and confirm E7 no longer appears and Pb7 is reporting a valid temperature reading.

When to call a professional

If the alarm persists after probe replacement and correcting the type setting, the Pb7 input on the controller board may be damaged. A licensed refrigeration engineer should test input-channel integrity and replace the controller if the fault is confirmed internal.
