Eliwell LA1 Error Code
in folder AL · Relay on (if configured) · No effect on regulation · Record label

What does Eliwell LA1 mean?
LA1 is the low temperature alarm on probe 1 (Pb1). The controller triggers this alarm when the measured cabinet temperature drops below the configured minimum threshold (parameter LAL or LA1 limit). The alarm is logged in the alarm folder and does not block refrigeration regulation — compressor control continues normally.
Symptoms
- Display alternates between 'LA1' and the current temperature reading.
- Alarm is recorded in the controller's alarm log (AL folder).
- Alarm relay activates if configured.
- Buzzer sounds if fitted and enabled.
- Normal refrigeration regulation continues without interruption.
Common causes
- Cabinet temperature has dropped below the configured low-limit alarm threshold (LAL parameter).
- Low alarm threshold is set too close to the operating setpoint, causing nuisance trips.
- Refrigeration system is over-cooling due to a stuck-open expansion valve or thermostat fault.
- Door left open in cold weather allowing ambient temperatures below the alarm limit.
- Pb1 probe reading is inaccurate due to ice formation or poor placement.

Diagnostic steps
Check the actual cabinet temperature
Read the temperature displayed on the controller and compare it with an independent thermometer inside the cabinet to confirm the reading is accurate.
Review the low alarm limit parameter (LAL)
Enter the programming menu and check the LAL (or LA1) parameter. If it is set too close to the operating setpoint, adjust it to a value appropriate for the application.
Inspect the Pb1 probe location and condition
Confirm the probe is positioned correctly in the air stream, is not covered by ice, and is not adjacent to the evaporator coil where it could read abnormally low values.
Investigate refrigeration system for over-cooling
Check whether the compressor or expansion valve is causing excessive refrigerating effect. Verify setpoint, differential, and compressor run-time parameters are appropriate.
Reset and monitor the alarm
Press any button to silence the buzzer and clear the alarm LED. Monitor temperature over the next full cycle to confirm it stays within limits.
When to call a professional
If the cabinet temperature is genuinely below the safe storage limit and adjusting alarm parameters does not resolve the root cause, or if the refrigeration system appears to be running continuously without controlling temperature, a certified refrigeration engineer should inspect the expansion valve, refrigerant charge, and thermostat calibration.
