Frymaster E36
Valve interface board failure. VIB connection lost or board failure; filtration and top-off disabled. Call service.

What does Frymaster E36 mean?
The FQ4000 controller has lost communication with the Valve Interface Board (VIB) — the dedicated board that drives and monitors the motorized drain and return valves in the FilterQuick filtration system. Without the VIB, the controller cannot command or confirm valve positions, so it disables all filtration and automatic top-off functions. Cooking continues normally, but oil quality will degrade without filtration.
Symptoms
- Display shows E36 and filtration cannot be initiated.
- Automatic top-off is also disabled alongside filtration.
- No valve motor sounds during a filtration command — the VIB is not sending drive signals.
- Error persists across power cycles if the VIB or its CAN connection is faulty.
Common causes
- VIB board failed internally — board power fault or processor failure.
- CAN bus communication cable disconnected or damaged between the controller and the VIB.
- CAN terminator missing or failed on the VIB board segment of the CAN network.
- Loose or corroded CAN bus connector at the VIB board.
- VIB board 24 VDC power supply fault — blown fuse or open power wiring.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Power cycle the fryer
Turn the fryer completely off, wait 30 seconds, and restore power. A transient CAN communication dropout can cause E36 and may clear after a clean power cycle. If E36 returns immediately, the fault is persistent.
- 02
Inspect the CAN bus cable and connectors at the VIB
Locate the VIB board in the fryer component box. Inspect the CAN bus connector for loose seating, bent pins, or corrosion. Reseat all connectors firmly. Also check for physical damage to the CAN cable along its routing path.
- 03
Verify CAN bus termination
The FQ4000 CAN network requires a 120 Ω termination resistor at each end of the CAN segment. If the VIB is at an end of the segment, confirm its terminator is installed and not damaged. A missing terminator causes intermittent or persistent CAN faults.
- 04
Check VIB board power supply
Measure 24 VDC at the VIB board power input. No voltage indicates a blown fuse on the VIB power circuit or an open wiring segment. Check the VIB board fuse (see also E68) and inspect the power harness for damage.
- 05
Replace the VIB board
If power is confirmed present at the VIB, CAN connections are good, and E36 persists, the VIB board has failed internally and requires replacement with an OEM part. After replacement, test a complete filtration cycle to confirm communication is restored.

When to call a professional
E36 requires a licensed Frymaster technician for VIB board replacement and CAN bus diagnosis. The CAN network on the FQ4000 must be properly configured and terminated after any board replacement to prevent cascading communication faults affecting filtration, top-off, and heating systems.
