Frymaster E41 Error Code

Oil in pan error. The system detects that oil may be present in the filter pan.

What does Frymaster E41 mean?

Before a filtration cycle begins, the FQ4000 checks whether the filter pan is empty. E41 means the controller detected the presence of oil in the filter pan before draining was commanded — an unexpected condition that could indicate residual oil from a previous incomplete filtration, a leaking valve, or an oil spill in the pan. The controller prevents the cycle from proceeding to avoid overfilling the pan.

Symptoms

  • Display shows E41 when a filtration cycle is initiated.
  • Oil is visible or sensed in the filter pan before the drain valve was opened.
  • Filtration cycle aborts before the vat begins to drain.
  • If oil leaked into the pan from a previous cycle, pan may be nearly full.

Common causes

  • Residual oil left in the filter pan from a previous filtration cycle that did not fully return oil to the vat.
  • Drain or return valve leaking past its seat, allowing oil to seep into the pan between cycles.
  • Oil pan sensor fault — sensor detecting oil when the pan is actually empty.
  • Filter pan not fully seated, causing oil to drip in from a fitting or seal.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Inspect the filter pan

Carefully pull out the filter pan and visually check for oil. If oil is present, it must be addressed before initiating filtration — the pan must be empty at the start of a drain cycle.

  2. Return residual oil manually if needed

If oil is in the pan from an incomplete previous cycle, use the manual return function (Home > Filtration > Manual Return) to pump the oil back into the vat, then empty and clean the pan before retrying.

  3. Check drain and return valves for leaks

With the fryer in standby and the pan empty, observe whether oil seeps into the pan over 10–15 minutes. Any seepage indicates a drain or return valve not fully seating — the affected valve must be inspected and serviced.

  4. Inspect the oil pan sensor

If the pan is confirmed empty but E41 persists, the oil-in-pan sensor (typically a float or optical sensor in the pan) may be stuck, fouled, or failed. Clean the sensor and test its operation using the component check function.

  5. Clear the error and retry filtration

Once the pan is confirmed empty and no leaks are present, clear the E41 error and initiate a filtration cycle. Monitor the cycle to confirm the drain valve opens and oil drains normally.

When to call a professional

Call a licensed technician if valves are found to be leaking past their seats, or if the oil-in-pan sensor fails testing and requires replacement. Leaking valves in the oil circuit can result in uncontrolled oil drainage — a burn and fire hazard requiring proper component replacement. Frymaster service: 1-800-551-8633.
