What does Frymaster E46 mean?
The FQ4000 controller has lost CAN bus communication with System Interface Board 1 (SIB 1). The SIB is the board that directly controls the heating relays, monitors the high-limit switch, and interfaces the controller with the burner or heating element circuit. Without SIB 1, the fryer cannot heat and all SIB-dependent safety monitoring is lost. This is a critical fault that shuts down the affected vat.
Symptoms
- Display shows E46; the affected vat stops heating immediately.
- No response to heat commands on the vat connected to SIB 1.
- Oil temperature drops progressively with no recovery.
- Other vats (if present) may continue to operate normally if they have independent SIBs.
Common causes
- CAN bus cable disconnected or damaged between the controller and SIB 1.
- SIB 1 board failed internally — processor or power supply failure on the board.
- Missing or failed CAN termination resistor on the SIB 1 segment.
- Loose or corroded CAN connector at the SIB 1 board.
- SIB 1 24 VAC power supply fault — blown fuse or open wiring.

Diagnostic steps
Power cycle the fryer
Turn the fryer off, wait 30 seconds, and restore power. A transient CAN communication fault can cause E46 and may clear on a clean reboot. If E46 returns within a minute, the fault is persistent.
Inspect the CAN cable and SIB 1 connector
Locate SIB 1 in the component box. Inspect the CAN bus connector for loose seating, bent or corroded pins. Inspect the CAN cable for visible damage along its routing. Reseat all connectors and retest.
Verify CAN bus termination
Confirm that the CAN termination resistor is installed on the SIB 1 board if it is at an endpoint of the CAN network. A missing 120 Ω terminator on an endpoint board causes persistent communication failures.
Check SIB 1 power supply
Measure 24 VAC at the SIB 1 power input terminals. No voltage indicates a blown fuse in the SIB power circuit or an open wiring segment upstream. Locate and replace the blown fuse or repair the wiring.
Replace SIB 1 board
If power is confirmed at SIB 1, CAN connections are good, and E46 persists, the SIB 1 board has failed internally. Replace with an OEM SIB board. After replacement, power the fryer and verify the controller recognizes SIB 1 and heating resumes normally.
When to call a professional
E46 always requires a licensed Frymaster technician. SIB board replacement involves live 24 VAC circuits on gas models and line-voltage wiring on electric models. Incorrect SIB board installation creates heating control and safety circuit hazards. The SIB board must be configured correctly after replacement. Frymaster service: 1-800-551-8633.
