What does Frymaster E61 mean?

The FQ4000 controller stores a configuration parameter that identifies whether the fryer is a gas or electric model. This setting determines which heating control logic, relay sequences, and safety checks the controller runs. E61 means the stored energy type does not match the actual fryer hardware — most commonly occurring after a controller replacement when the new controller was not configured for the correct energy type.

Symptoms

  • Display shows E61 at startup or when a heat command is issued.
  • Fryer refuses to heat — the controller is running the wrong heating sequence for the installed hardware.
  • May follow a controller board replacement if the technician did not configure energy type.
  • No other obvious fault — the physical hardware appears normal.

Common causes

  • Controller replaced with a unit programmed for a different energy type (e.g., gas controller installed on an electric fryer or vice versa).
  • Controller firmware reset to factory defaults during a software update, clearing the energy type setting.
  • Incorrect energy type selected during initial commissioning.

Diagnostic steps

  1. 01

    Access the energy type setting

Navigate to Home > Settings (press the Home button) > Service > enter service password (1650 on most FQ4000 models) > Energy Type. The exact path may vary by firmware version — consult the FQ4000 service manual for your software revision.

  2. 02

Verify the correct energy type for this fryer

Check the fryer's rating plate (typically on the inside of the door or on the rear panel) to confirm whether the unit is gas or electric. Match this to the energy type setting in the controller.

  3. 03

Select the correct energy type and save

Change the energy type setting to match the physical fryer (Gas or Electric). Save the setting. The controller will typically require a restart to apply the new configuration.

  4. 04

Power cycle and verify E61 clears

After saving the correct energy type, power the fryer off and back on. Confirm E61 does not reappear and the fryer responds normally to heat commands.

  5. 05

    Test a full heat cycle

Command the fryer to heat and verify the temperature rises normally to setpoint. Confirm the correct relay and ignition sequences are now executing for the energy type.
