What does Frymaster E86 mean?
The left return valve was commanded closed at the end of the oil return phase of a filtration cycle, and the closed-position confirmation feedback was not received. Filtration and top-off are disabled to prevent unintended oil flow through an open return path. This is the closed-position counterpart to E85, and mirrors E35 for the left-specific valve in a multi-battery configuration.
Symptoms
- Display shows E86 at the end of a filtration return phase.
- Left return valve may be physically open, creating a return path when not intended.
- Filtration and auto top-off are locked out until the fault is resolved.
- If the valve is physically open, oil may backflow through the return line during subsequent pump operation.
Common causes
- Left return valve actuator stalled before reaching the fully closed position.
- Closed-position feedback switch on the left return valve misaligned, dirty, or failed.
- Mechanical obstruction preventing the left return valve from fully seating closed.
- VIB harness wiring fault — open circuit in the left valve closed-position feedback wire.
- VIB board failure preventing receipt of the closed-position feedback signal.
Diagnostic steps

Confirm left return valve physical position
With the fryer off and oil cooled, inspect the left return valve to determine if it is physically closed. If the valve is open, proceed with motor and linkage inspection.

Check for binding or obstruction
Inspect the left return valve seat and travel path for hardened grease or debris preventing full closure. Clean and cycle manually if accessible.

Test the closed-position feedback switch
With the left valve physically closed, measure continuity on its closed-position feedback switch. No continuity when physically closed indicates a misaligned or failed switch — adjust or replace.

Inspect the VIB feedback wiring for the left valve
Trace and measure continuity on the left valve closed-feedback signal wire from the switch to the VIB board. Repair any open-circuit wiring segment.

Replace actuator or VIB board as indicated
Replace the left return valve actuator if it cannot drive to the closed position. Replace the VIB board if all wiring and switches test good. Run a complete filtration cycle to confirm resolution.
