What does Frymaster E87 mean?
On FQ4000 battery configurations with three return valves (left, right/central, and right), E87 indicates the right or central return valve was commanded open during filtration return and position confirmation was not received. The right/central valve routes filtered oil back to the center or right vat in the battery. Filtration and top-off are halted. The diagnostic approach is identical to E85 but for the right/central valve position.
Symptoms
- Display shows E87 during the filtration return phase.
- Filtered oil does not return to the right or central vat.
- Right/central vat oil level is low after filtration — oil remains in the filter pan.
- Filtration and top-off disabled across affected vats.
Common causes
- Right/central return valve actuator motor failed or mechanically jammed.
- Open-position feedback switch on the right/central return valve misaligned or failed.
- VIB board wiring fault on the right/central valve circuit.
- Grease or debris blocking the valve from opening fully.
- VIB board failure.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Use component check to command the right/central return valve
Navigate to component check on the FQ4000 and command the right/central return valve open. Observe actuator response and feedback receipt.
- 02
Inspect the right/central return valve actuator
With power off and oil cooled, inspect the actuator for grease buildup, stripped gears, or motor failure. Attempt to manually cycle the valve.
- 03
Test the open-position feedback switch
Drive the valve to open position and verify continuity on the open-position switch. No continuity confirms a misaligned or failed switch.
- 04
Check VIB harness at the right/central valve connector
Inspect and measure continuity on the drive and feedback wires between the valve and the VIB board.
- 05
Replace faulty components and test
Replace the actuator if it does not respond, the feedback switch if position sensing fails, or the VIB board if wiring is intact but no signal is received. Run a full filtration cycle to confirm.
