R32 refrigerant leak alarm (refrigerant sensor) — outdoor unit stops

Source: Gree/Gree_all-match-floor-standing-r32-service-manual-a_HVAC.pdf

What does Gree EA mean?

EA is the R32 refrigerant-leak alarm on models fitted with a refrigerant sensor. The sensor monitors for R32 leakage in real time; when it detects leaked refrigerant it triggers the alarm and buzzer, the indoor unit displays EA, and the outdoor unit stops running. R32 is a mildly flammable A2L refrigerant, so this is a safety alarm.

Symptoms

  • Indoor unit displays EA
  • Audible buzzer / alarm sounds
  • Outdoor unit stops running
  • Possible signs of a refrigerant leak in the system

Common causes

  • R32 refrigerant leaking and detected by the refrigerant sensor
  • Leak in the refrigerant circuit (joints, coil or piping)

Diagnostic steps

  1. Ventilate the room

In case of refrigerant leakage, open the window immediately for ventilation to reduce the concentration of refrigerant in the room.

  2. Remove ignition sources

Check the room to ensure there is no fire source, since R32 is flammable; keep ignition sources away from the area.

  3. Have the leak located and repaired

Because EA indicates detected R32 leakage and the outdoor unit has stopped, arrange leak detection and repair before returning the system to service.

When to call a professional

EA is a flammable-refrigerant safety alarm — ventilate, remove ignition sources, and do not keep resetting the unit. Locating and repairing an R32 leak, then recovering and recharging, must be done by a refrigeration technician with an appropriate refrigerant-handling licence, following national gas regulations. Call a licensed HVAC professional to handle the leak.
