What does RM Gastro E4 mean?

E4 codes are reported by the coil module on RM Gastro induction ranges. Sub-codes cover an initialization error from wrong system configuration or damaged bus/knob, coil overheating, an allocation error from a wrongly set DIP-switch address, an external temperature-sensor fault, and communication errors caused by damaged CAN-bus wiring or a faulty coil module. An internal error indicates a damaged generator.

Symptoms

  • Display reads “E4” followed by a number
  • Affected cooking zone fails to start or stops mid-use
  • Coil runs hot and the zone shuts down on overheat protection
  • Communication dropouts between the coil module and the control

Common causes

  • Incorrect system configuration, damaged LIN/CAN bus or damaged LIN knob (E4 1)
  • Coil overheating, or a damaged coil temperature sensor (E4 2)
  • Incorrectly configured DIP switch for the address setting (E4 4, E4 12)
  • Damaged external temperature-sensor wiring or a damaged sensor (E4 5)
  • Damaged CAN-bus wiring or a damaged coil module (E4 13, E4 15)
  • Damaged generator causing an internal error (E4 14)

Diagnostic steps

  1. Let the coil cool down

For coil overheating, turn off the cooking zone, remove the pots and wait for the zone to cool before restarting.

  2. Check the system configuration

Confirm the system configuration matches the installation instructions; an initialization error often means the configuration is not correct.

  3. Set the DIP switch correctly

For allocation and configuration codes, check and correct the DIP-switch address setting for the affected module.

  4. Inspect and replace bus wiring

Check the LIN/CAN bus wiring; replace damaged CAN-bus wiring that causes communication errors.

  5. Replace sensors or the coil module

Check and replace the external temperature-sensor wiring or sensor, the coil temperature sensor, or the coil module as the relevant code requires.

  6. Replace the generator for an internal error

An E4 internal error indicates a damaged generator, which the manual says must be replaced.

When to call a professional

Replacing the coil module, the generator, the LIN knob, temperature sensors, or CAN/LIN bus wiring, and setting DIP-switch addresses to the installation spec, are jobs for an authorised technician. The manual restricts internal interventions to qualified, authorised persons and voids the warranty otherwise. If a cool-down restart and a configuration check do not clear E4, contact service.
