What does Carel E12 mean?
E12 on Carel ir33 and pCO controllers indicates that serial probe S12 has stopped sending valid data updates over the serial bus. Like E11, this causes the controller to fall back to duty-cycle operation (parameter c4) for any function dependent on S12. The alarm is automatic and resets when communication with S12 is restored.
Symptoms
- E12 flashes on the display alternating with the temperature.
- Control functions relying on S12 switch to duty-cycle fallback.
- Alarm relay activates.
- Temperature monitoring for the S12 zone is unavailable.
Common causes
- RS-485 bus wiring fault between the controller and the S12 node.
- S12 probe lost power due to a supply failure.
- Bus address duplication between S12 and another probe on the network.
- S12 probe hardware failure or firmware hang.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Inspect S12 bus connections
Examine the data cable at the S12 probe end and at the controller bus terminal. Re-seat and tighten loose connections.
- 02
Verify S12 probe power
Measure supply voltage at the S12 probe terminals. Low or absent voltage confirms a supply fault upstream.
- 03
Check for address conflicts
Confirm S12 has a unique node address on the bus. Refer to the probe address configuration (DIP switch or programming) and ensure no other device shares the same address.
- 04
Test bus continuity
With power off, use a multimeter to verify continuity of both data lines from controller to S12. High resistance or open circuit confirms a cable break.
- 05
Reset and re-commission
After repairs, power-cycle the system and confirm E12 clears. Check that S12 temperature readings appear plausible on the controller display.

When to call a professional
If serial bus diagnostics are beyond your tools or expertise, contact a Carel-authorized service technician who can use Carel's PSTN or RS-485 diagnostic software to identify communication faults. Persistent E12 with all wiring confirmed good points to a defective probe or controller communication port requiring component replacement.
