What does Carel IA mean?

The IA alarm is an immediate external alarm triggered when a digital input configured for external alarm contact opens. On the Carel ir33/SmartCella/UltraCella, this input is wired to an external device — such as a door switch, a remote alarm relay, or an auxiliary safety — and when that contact opens, the controller activates the alarm output and displays IA. The controller may shut down all outputs depending on configuration parameter A4.

Symptoms

• IA is displayed alternately with the current temperature on the controller.
• Buzzer sounds immediately when the external contact opens.
• All controlled outputs (compressor, fans, defrost) may shut down if A4=1.
• Alarm relay output activates, potentially signaling a BMS or remote monitoring system.

Common causes

• External alarm device (door switch, high-temperature cutout, or remote relay) has opened its contact.
• Wiring to the external alarm digital input is broken or disconnected.
• Faulty external device connected to the alarm input terminal.
• Incorrect parameter A4 configuration causing spurious triggering on contact state.

Diagnostic steps

   Identify the external alarm source

   Trace the wiring connected to the IA digital input terminal on the controller. Determine what device is wired to this input — door switch, remote relay, or safety cutout.

   Check the external device status

   Inspect the physical device (e.g., door switch, pressure cutout). Confirm whether the alarm condition it monitors is actually present or if the device has failed.

   Inspect terminal wiring

   Check that the digital input wiring is secure at the controller terminal and at the external device. Look for broken conductors or loose connections.

   Verify parameter A4 and A7 settings

   Confirm that A4 is set correctly for the intended alarm behavior and that A7 delay is appropriate. An incorrect A4 value can cause the controller to shut down on a spurious open.

   Reset the alarm

   Press the alarm reset (Prg) key to silence the alarm. The alarm will clear automatically once the external contact re-closes. If the alarm persists with no external fault, suspect wiring or the input device.
