What does Carel EE mean?

The EE alarm on Carel ir33/SmartCella/UltraCella controllers indicates an EEPROM memory error — either the unit parameters stored in non-volatile memory have been corrupted, or the memory chip cannot be read or written. The controller detects this at power-up or during a parameter save operation and displays EE. Because parameters govern all control behavior, this fault can disrupt normal operation.

Symptoms

  • EE is displayed at power-up or after a parameter write operation.
  • Controller may revert to default parameter values, changing setpoints and alarm thresholds.
  • Some or all outputs may not operate correctly due to corrupted configuration.
  • The alarm does not reset automatically; it requires manual intervention.

Common causes

  • Power interruption (brownout or surge) during a parameter save corrupted the EEPROM.
  • EEPROM chip has reached end of write-cycle life due to excessive parameter changes.
  • Controller board hardware failure affecting the memory circuit.
  • Electrostatic discharge or overvoltage event damaged the memory device.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Perform a power cycle

Switch the controller off at the mains, wait 30 seconds, then power it back on. A transient power glitch can cause a false EE; a clean power cycle may clear it.

  2. Re-enter all operating parameters

If the alarm clears after power-cycle but parameters have reverted to defaults, re-enter all configuration values from the installation record or the controller's label/documentation.

  3. Check power supply quality

Measure supply voltage at the controller terminals under load. Voltage outside the controller's rated range (typically 230 V ±10 %) during operation causes write errors.

  4. Install a surge protection device

If supply disturbances are suspected, fit a DIN-rail surge protector upstream of the controller to protect the EEPROM from future corruption.

  5. Replace the controller if fault persists

If EE returns after re-programming, the EEPROM is permanently damaged. Replace the controller board with a compatible Carel unit and re-configure all parameters.

When to call a professional

Replace the controller board only if you are comfortable with controller wiring and parameter programming. If you are unfamiliar with Carel parameter configuration, contact a Carel-authorized service engineer to replace and commission the unit. Incorrect parameter entry after replacement can cause the refrigeration system to operate outside safe temperature limits, risking product loss or compressor damage.
