What does Carel HI mean?

The HI alarm activates when the temperature measured by probe S1 (the room or cabinet probe) rises above the configured high-temperature alarm threshold for longer than the allowed delay. On Carel ir33/SmartCella/UltraCella controllers the alarm signals that the refrigerated space is warmer than safe operating limits. HI is an automatic alarm — it resets once temperature drops back below the threshold.

Symptoms

  • HI flashes alternately with the current temperature reading on the display.
  • Alarm output activates and buzzer sounds.
  • Cabinet or cold-room temperature is at or above the high-temperature alarm setpoint.
  • Alarm clears automatically once temperature recovers to within normal range.

Common causes

  • Door left open or not sealing properly, allowing warm ambient air into the cabinet.
  • Large product load recently placed in the cabinet raising internal temperature temporarily.
  • Condenser coils dirty or blocked, reducing refrigeration capacity.
  • Refrigerant undercharge or leak reducing system cooling output.
  • Compressor or fan motor failure preventing heat removal.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Verify the actual cabinet temperature

Use a calibrated reference thermometer to confirm the space is genuinely high before pursuing equipment faults.

  2. Check doors and seals

Inspect door gaskets and latches. A poorly sealed door is the most common cause of high-temperature alarms in commercial refrigeration.

  3. Inspect condenser coils

Check the condenser for dust and debris buildup. Clean condenser fins with compressed air or a coil cleaner brush if fouled.

  4. Confirm fans are running

Verify that evaporator and condenser fan motors are spinning at normal speed. A seized fan motor significantly reduces heat transfer.

  5. Reset the alarm

Press the Prg button to reset the alarm. If the root cause has been resolved, HI clears automatically as temperature falls; if it persists, escalate to a technician.

When to call a professional

If the HI alarm continues after checking doors, fans, and condenser cleanliness, contact a licensed refrigeration engineer. Persistent high cabinet temperature despite the compressor running suggests a refrigerant leak, compressor valve failure, or expansion valve fault — all of which require F-Gas certification to diagnose and repair safely.
