What does Dixell/Copeland E14 mean?

The XWi70K controller displays E14 when a short-circuit condition is detected in Embraco variable-speed compressor 1 (EMB1) by the serial inverter interface. Compressor 2 short-circuit is shown as E24. Unlike under-speed faults, a short circuit requires a full power cycle to clear — the retry function alone does not reset this fault.

Symptoms

  • Controller display shows 'E14' or 'E24' for compressor 1 or 2.
  • Regulation stops immediately; compressor output de-energizes.
  • Alarm relay activates; buzzer sounds.
  • Fault does not self-clear on retry — power cycle required.

Common causes

  • Phase-to-phase or phase-to-ground short circuit in the compressor motor windings.
  • Damaged compressor power leads or wiring harness creating an electrical short.
  • Failed Embraco inverter module with internal output bridge short.
  • Moisture or contamination in the compressor terminal box causing insulation breakdown.
  • Liquid refrigerant flooding the compressor and damaging motor windings.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Power off the unit completely

Switch off the main isolator and allow capacitors in the inverter to discharge for at least 5 minutes before performing any electrical checks.

  2. Measure compressor winding resistance

Disconnect the compressor motor leads at the inverter output terminals and measure resistance between each motor phase. Any reading near zero ohms or open-circuit indicates a winding fault.

  3. Perform insulation resistance test

Using a 500 V megohmmeter, test between each motor phase and the compressor shell. Resistance below 1 MΩ indicates moisture ingress or winding insulation failure.

  4. Inspect power wiring and terminal block

Examine all power cables between inverter and compressor for chafe marks, pinched insulation, or signs of overheating. Repair or replace damaged wiring.

  5. Restart after power cycle

After confirming wiring integrity, restore power and observe for fault recurrence. If E14 clears after power cycle but returns, intermittent shorts or an inverter drive fault is likely.

When to call a professional

A short-circuit fault is a serious electrical failure. Engage a licensed refrigeration technician immediately if winding resistance or insulation tests indicate a compressor failure, or if the inverter module itself has failed. Compressor replacement and inverter drive diagnosis require specialist tooling and carry high-voltage safety hazards that are not suitable for field-level troubleshooting without proper training.
