Dixell/Copeland F04 Error Code
Temperature / pressure Setpoint for stopping the defrost cycle -50.0 -58 110 230

What does Dixell/Copeland F04 mean?
On the Dixell IC100CX iChill controller, DF04 (displayed as F04) is the defrost termination setpoint. When the defrost is running and the outdoor coil probe temperature rises above DF04, the defrost cycle ends and normal heat pump operation resumes. Setting DF04 too low results in premature defrost termination with ice remaining; setting it too high prolongs the defrost cycle unnecessarily.
Symptoms
- Defrost terminates too early and ice remains on the outdoor coil (DF04 set too low).
- Defrost cycles run longer than expected, increasing energy consumption (DF04 set too high).
- Defrost ends on DF07 maximum time rather than the DF04 probe temperature (DF04 may not be reached).
Common causes
- DF04 setpoint too low for the application — defrost termination probe reaches DF04 before all ice has cleared.
- DF04 setpoint too high — probe never reaches termination temperature and defrost times out on DF07.
- Defrost termination probe positioned in the wrong location on the coil — not in the coldest zone.
- Probe fault causing incorrect temperature reading that terminates defrost prematurely or holds it open.

Diagnostic steps
Observe defrost cycle termination behavior
During a defrost cycle, monitor whether it terminates on temperature (DF04 reached) or on time (DF07 timer). Consistent time-based termination with remaining ice indicates DF04 is set too high or probe placement is poor.
Verify DF04 setpoint
Access the DF sub-menu on the IC100CX. DF04 range is -50°C to 110°C (or equivalent pressure). A typical defrost termination setpoint for air-source heat pump coils is +5°C to +15°C depending on refrigerant and application.
Check defrost termination probe placement
The defrost termination probe should be located in the coldest section of the outdoor coil where ice accumulates most heavily. Poor placement causes premature termination with ice still present.
Review DF07 maximum defrost time
DF07 is the maximum defrost duration regardless of DF04. Confirm DF07 is set long enough to clear ice if DF04 is not reached within normal conditions.
Check DF02 defrost type configuration
Verify DF02 is set to 0 (temperature/pressure control). If DF02 = 1 (time-based defrost), DF04 is not used as a termination condition and defrost ends only on DF07.
When to call a professional
Defrost termination tuning affects heat pump efficiency and outdoor coil life directly. A licensed HVAC/R technician should optimize DF04 alongside DF03 and DF07 during system commissioning, particularly in variable-climate installations or when the system consistently shows residual ice after each defrost cycle completes.
