What does Dixell/Copeland F14 mean?

On the Dixell IC100CX iChill controller, DF14 controls whether the condenser fans are forced on during the defrost cycle and the post-defrost drainage period (DF09). Set DF14 to 0 to keep fans off during defrost. Set DF14 to 1 to run fans only during the active defrost cycle. Set DF14 to 2 to run fans during both the defrost cycle and the entire DF09 draining time. When DF14 = 1, fan speed is governed by the DF15 pressure/temperature setpoint.

Symptoms

  • Outdoor coil not defrosting effectively despite heaters or hot gas running (fans off per DF14 = 0, removing heat).
  • Noise from fans running during defrost when DF14 = 1 or 2 — this is normal operation.
  • Water from defrost not draining before compressor restarts (DF14 = 2 with forced fan during DF09 helps drainage).

Common causes

  • DF14 = 0 in an application where condenser fans should assist heat distribution during defrost.
  • DF14 = 1 or 2 in an application where running fans during defrost is not desired (e.g., air-discharge noise concerns).
  • DF15 setpoint not aligned with actual condensing conditions, causing unintended fan behavior during defrost.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Determine the application defrost fan requirement

Review the system manufacturer's recommendation for condenser fan behavior during defrost. Some heat pump systems require fans during defrost; others do not.

  2. Set DF14 per application requirement

Access the DF sub-menu on the IC100CX. Set DF14 = 0 (fans off during defrost), 1 (fans on during defrost only), or 2 (fans on during defrost and DF09 draining time).

  3. Set DF15 fan control setpoint (if DF14 = 1)

When DF14 = 1, if condensing temperature/pressure exceeds DF15 during defrost, the controller activates the chiller-mode fan control. Set DF15 to avoid excessive condensing pressure during defrost.

  4. Observe defrost cycle with new settings

Run a manual defrost cycle and confirm fans behave as expected: off, on during defrost, or on during defrost and draining. Check that ice clears completely.

  5. Check DF21 fan status parameter

DF21 is a related parameter in some IC100CX firmware versions that sets fan status during defrost. Verify DF21 is consistent with DF14 in the system's parameter version.

When to call a professional

DF14 configuration is part of heat pump defrost commissioning and affects coil defrost effectiveness and noise characteristics. If defrost performance remains insufficient despite correct DF14 settings, a licensed HVAC/R technician should assess the entire defrost system including heating elements, hot gas circuit, and refrigerant charge.
