Manitowoc Ice E05
High-pressure control opened — the HPCO safety switch tripped on excess discharge pressure

What does Manitowoc Ice E05 mean?
Code E05 records that the high-pressure cutout switch (HPCO) opened. The HPCO is the discharge-pressure safety switch, so this code means the machine stopped because that switch tripped.
Symptoms
- Machine off with E05 logged; restarts then trips again under load
- Very hot condenser discharge air before the trip
- High side pressure spikes if gauges are attached by a technician
Common causes
- Severely dirty or blocked condenser
- Condenser fan failure during freeze
- Water-cooled: lost condenser water flow
- Refrigerant-side restriction keeping head pressure high
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Treat the condenser first
Clean the coil, restore airflow/water flow, and confirm the fan runs — most HPCO trips are heat-rejection failures, not switch failures.
- 02
Confirm the reset
The HPCO resets only after pressure falls below its reset threshold; allow the machine to cool before expecting a restart.
- 03
Recheck under load
Run a full freeze cycle and confirm the machine completes it without approaching another trip.
- 04
Escalate if it re-trips
A repeat trip with a clean, ventilated condenser needs gauge diagnosis of the high side by a refrigeration tech.

When to call a professional
Refrigeration-circuit work on this machine (gauges, refrigerant recovery, TXV or compressor replacement) requires an EPA-certified refrigeration technician, and Indigo units built on R290 propane additionally require flammable-refrigerant service procedures. If the fault returns after the basic checks here, book a qualified ice-machine technician rather than continuing to reset the unit.

Safety Limit 1 - freeze cycle ran too long (long freeze)
SL#2Safety Limit 2 - harvest cycle ran too long (long harvest)
SL#3Safety Limit 3 - no water sensed during the freeze cycle
E01Long freeze cycle — freeze ran to the 60-minute limit; 6 consecutive trigger the SL#1 shutdown
E02Long harvest cycle — harvest hit the 3.5-minute limit; repeated events log SL#2
E03Input power loss recorded in the event log on power-up (event-log entry only, no alarm)
E04High condenser temperature — liquid line too hot (air- or water-cooled condenser fault)
E07Starving TXV or low on charge — evaporator inlet/outlet (T3/T4) spread over 12°F, 10 consecutive checks
E08TXV fault (dual-circuit/single-evaporator models) — evaporator underfeed signature
E09Evaporator flooding, circuit 1 — early-freeze discharge temperature below the 6-cycle average
E10Evaporator flooding, circuit 2 (dual-TXV) — early-freeze discharge temperature below the 6-cycle average
E11Refrigeration fault — refrigeration-side abnormality; run full system diagnostics
