What does Carel AL63 mean?

AL63 means Driver 1 has lost its LAN (pLAN) connection to the pCO master controller. The pLAN network link is required for the master to send superheat setpoints, go-ahead signals, and operating mode commands to Driver 1. When the link drops and does not recover within 30 seconds, Circuit 1 shuts off and AL63 is raised.

Symptoms

• Circuit 1 shuts off after a 30-second LAN communication loss.
• AL63 requires manual reset to recover Circuit 1.
• Other pLAN devices may also show communication errors if the network fault is shared.
• Driver 1 LED may indicate a network error state.

Common causes

• Broken, disconnected, or improperly terminated pLAN wiring between Driver 1 and the pCO.
• Incorrect pLAN network address configured on Driver 1.
• Power supply interruption to Driver 1 during operation.
• Electromagnetic interference disrupting the RS485-based pLAN signal.
• Damaged pLAN card or communication port on the pCO controller.

Diagnostic steps

   Inspect pLAN wiring and termination

   Check all RS485 pLAN cable connections between the pCO and Driver 1. Confirm a 120 Ω terminating resistor is installed at both ends of the bus and wiring polarity is correct.

   Verify Driver 1 pLAN address

   Confirm Driver 1's pLAN address is set correctly and does not conflict with other devices on the network.

   Measure pLAN signal integrity

   Use a multimeter to verify DC bus voltage between pLAN + and − terminals at Driver 1's connector. Check for shorts or opens in the cable run.

   Inspect for EMI sources near the pLAN cable

   Ensure the pLAN cable is routed separately from high-voltage power cables. Use shielded twisted-pair cable where possible, grounding shield at one end only.

   Manually reset AL63

   After restoring pLAN communication, manually reset AL63. Circuit 1 will resume operation once the go-ahead is re-issued.

When to call a professional

If pLAN communication cannot be restored after wiring inspection and address verification, the pCO communication card or Driver 1 board may have failed. Component replacement on a live controller panel involves high-voltage hazards and requires a licensed technician. Do not run Circuit 1 without pLAN supervision — critical safety commands from the master controller will be lost.
