What does Carel E204 mean?
E204 is a float contradiction alarm on the Carel humiSteam humidifier. The controller has detected a conflict between the water level signals from the float or level control assembly — for example, both a high and low water level condition indicated simultaneously, or a fill cycle that produced no expected level change. This indicates a malfunctioning level sensor, a stuck fill valve, or a contaminated cylinder.
Symptoms
- E204 displayed on the controller, alternating with the normal reading.
- Humidifier may halt the fill cycle or enter an alarm hold state.
- Fill electrovalve may cycle without the expected water level response.
- Cylinder level appears inconsistent or does not change during expected fill.
Common causes
- Scale or debris buildup on the level control electrodes causing false level signals.
- Fill electrovalve stuck open or leaking, maintaining an incorrect water level.
- Level sensor float mechanically stuck due to scale or foreign material.
- Cylinder has been heavily contaminated, interfering with conductivity-based level sensing.
- Wiring fault on the level control signal to the controller.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Turn off the humidifier and inspect the cylinder
Power down and remove the steam cylinder. Visually inspect for heavy scale deposits on the electrodes and level sensor components. Scale buildup is the most common cause of level contradiction errors.
- 02
Clean the cylinder and level control assembly
Clean the cylinder interior and the level control electrodes using the procedure in the service manual. Remove all scale and biological growth from the electrode surfaces and float assembly.
- 03
Inspect and clean the fill electrovalve
Remove and inspect the fill valve for scale deposits on the seat or stuck-open conditions. Flush or replace the valve if it cannot maintain a proper seal during off cycles.
- 04
Check wiring to the level control
Inspect the level sensor wiring harness for loose terminals or breaks. A disconnected wire on the level sensor creates a contradiction between the expected and actual level states.
- 05
Restart and observe fill cycle behavior
Power on the humidifier and monitor the fill cycle. Confirm that water level rises appropriately during fill and that the level signal changes as expected. If the contradiction recurs, contact Carel service.

When to call a professional
Contact Carel service if E204 persists after thorough cleaning and fill valve inspection. A recurring float contradiction on a recently serviced unit suggests a faulty level control board, a defective sensor assembly, or wiring damage inside the cabinet that requires factory-trained diagnostic support.
