What does Carel E231 mean?
E231 on Carel heaterSteam humidifiers is a high water conductivity pre-alarm. It triggers before the full shutdown threshold (E205) is reached, giving operators a warning that conductivity is elevated and requires attention. The humidifier is disabled at the E231 level but resets automatically when conductivity returns below the threshold.
Symptoms
- Humidifier is disabled at the pre-alarm level — output stops.
- E231 displayed on the controller.
- Conductivity reading is above the pre-alarm threshold but below the E205 shutdown level.
- Automatic reset occurs when conductivity drops to acceptable levels.
Common causes
- Mineral concentration in the cylinder increasing from insufficient dilution drain cycles.
- Supply water conductivity elevated due to seasonal or supply changes.
- Drain valve opening frequency insufficient for the current steam production rate.
- Clogged drain filter reducing drain flow volume.
- Conductivity measurement electrodes fouled, causing elevated readings.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Check supply water conductivity
Use a conductivity meter to measure the incoming water supply conductivity. Compare against the pre-alarm threshold configured in the controller.
- 02
Verify drain valve is operating correctly
Confirm the drain valve opens during scheduled drain cycles. Check for mineral scale or debris preventing full valve opening.
- 03
Clean the conductivity electrodes
Turn the machine off and clean the conductivity measurement electrodes in the tank with a soft brush and approved descaling agent.
- 04
Consider water treatment options
If supply water conductivity is consistently high, install partial demineralization upstream. Note that water softening increases sodium ions and does not reduce conductivity.
- 05
Monitor for escalation to E205
If E231 is not resolved promptly, conductivity will continue to rise and trigger E205 (full shutdown). Address the root cause before the full alarm is reached.

When to call a professional
If drain system components require repair or if E231 escalates frequently to E205, contact a qualified humidifier technician or water treatment specialist. Persistent high conductivity with adequate drain cycles indicates a water quality issue requiring a systematic engineering solution.
