What does Carel E401 mean?
E401 on Carel humiFog and humidification controllers signals an internal checksum error. The controller has detected that the checksum of its internal program memory does not match the expected value, indicating corruption of the firmware or configuration data stored in flash memory. The unit shuts down immediately and cannot resume operation until the firmware is reprogrammed by a Carel service center.
Symptoms
- Humidifier shuts down completely and does not restart.
- E401 (or E0 on older display formats) is shown on the controller.
- No operational parameters are accessible; the controller is unresponsive.
- Alarm relay activates and latches in closed position.
Common causes
- Corruption of the controller's internal program memory, typically from a failed firmware update.
- Power supply interruption during a firmware write operation.
- Static discharge or electrical transient damaging the flash memory.
- Hardware failure of the controller's non-volatile memory chip.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Confirm E401 is displayed
Cycle power to the controller and observe the display. If E401 reappears immediately after power-up, the firmware is corrupted and cannot self-recover.
- 02
Do not attempt parameter adjustment
E401 is not a configuration error that can be corrected by modifying parameters. Do not reset or reprogram parameters — the underlying firmware must be restored.
- 03
Document the controller model and firmware version
Record the controller part number (printed on the label) and any visible firmware revision information for use when contacting Carel service.
- 04
Contact the nearest Carel service center

When to call a professional
E401 always requires a licensed Carel service technician or authorized service center. This alarm cannot be resolved by field operators. The controller must be reprogrammed using Carel proprietary tools available only to factory-authorized personnel. Do not continue operating the humidifier with a corrupted controller.
