What does Carel E431 mean?
E431 is a high conductivity warning on Carel humiFog controllers. The controller measures the conductivity of the supply water and raises E431 when it exceeds the warning threshold. Unlike E405 (shutdown), E431 is a warning that allows continued operation with automatic reset. It alerts operators to take corrective action before conductivity rises further and triggers a full shutdown.
Symptoms
- E431 or Ec warning code displayed on the controller.
- Humidifier continues to operate normally during E431.
- Alarm clears automatically when conductivity drops below the warning threshold.
- Alarm relay contact opens (not influencing humidifier output).
Common causes
- High mineral concentration in supply water from insufficient dilution drain cycles.
- Supply water source has inherently high conductivity (hard water area).
- Drain valve or drain pump failure preventing water dilution cycles.
- Clogged drain filter restricting drain flow.
- Water softening treatment increasing sodium ion concentration without reducing conductivity.
Diagnostic steps
- 01
Check supply water conductivity
Measure the conductivity of the incoming water supply using a conductivity meter. Compare against the controller's warning threshold (parameter settings for conductivity pre-alarm).
- 02
Verify drain valve and drain pump operation
Confirm the drain valve opens and the drain pump activates during drain cycles. A blocked or failed drain component prevents dilution of concentrated water in the cylinder.
- 03
Inspect and clean the drain filter
Remove and inspect the drain filter inside the cylinder for mineral buildup. Clean or replace the filter if restricted.
- 04
Clean the conductivity measurement electrodes
Turn the machine off and clean the conductivity electrodes in the water tank with a soft brush and descaling solution approved by Carel.
- 05
Consider water treatment options
If supply water conductivity is chronically high, install partial demineralization treatment upstream. Note: water softening alone does not resolve high conductivity.

When to call a professional
If E431 escalates to E405 (high conductivity shutdown) or if drain valve/pump replacement is required, contact a qualified service technician. Persistent high conductivity problems may indicate a more significant water quality issue that requires engineering evaluation of the water treatment system.
