Follett DRAIN CLOG Error Code

Water detected in the drain pan indicating a blocked or slow drain

What does Follett DRAIN CLOG mean?

The Horizon icemaker has a drain clog sensor in the plastic drain pan behind the drain solenoid. It detects water rising to just below the top edge of the pan. If water does not flow properly out of the drain pan, it rises to the sensor and triggers the DRAIN CLOG condition, which the board lights as a red alarm LED. This commonly appears during a self-flushing purge cycle when drainage cannot keep up.

Symptoms

  • DRAIN CLOG (red) LED illuminated on the control board.
  • Water standing in the drain pan near the top edge.
  • Fault appears especially during the self-flushing purge cycle.
  • Reduced or stopped ice machine operation while the alarm is active.

Common causes

  • Blocked or restricted drain line preventing pan water from flowing out.
  • Drain not sloped per spec (manual requires at least 1/4 inch per foot on the vented line).
  • Scale or sediment buildup in the drain pan or drain path.
  • Drain solenoid not opening or draining correctly.
  • Drain clog sensor fouled or faulty.

Diagnostic steps

  1. Confirm the alarm

Check that the DRAIN CLOG indicator is lit and look for water pooled in the drain pan near the sensor at the top edge of the pan.

  2. Clear the drain line

Inspect and clear the drain line so water flows freely out of the pan, since the sensor trips when pan water cannot drain, particularly during the purge cycle.

  3. Verify drain slope and routing

Confirm the 3/4 inch vented drain line slopes a minimum of 1/4 inch per foot and is not connected to other drains, per the installation specification.

  4. Check the drain solenoid and pan

Verify the drain solenoid behind the pan operates and that the pan and sensor area are free of scale or sediment that would hold water against the sensor.

  5. Clean per schedule

Perform the recommended cleaning to remove minerals and sediment that contribute to slow drainage and recurring DRAIN CLOG alarms.

When to call a professional

Clearing the drain and checking the drain solenoid and clog sensor means working inside the icemaker, where the manual warns of moving and hot parts and instructs disconnecting power before servicing. If the DRAIN CLOG alarm returns after the line is cleared and the slope verified, or if the drain solenoid or sensor is suspect, a Follett-authorized service technician should diagnose the drain circuit to keep the icemaker sanitary and in service.
