What does Manitowoc Ice E31 mean?

Code E31 means the machine is in Safe Mode — a timed water-fill or freeze cycle based on the last 5 good cycles that lets the machine keep producing for up to 72 hours when the ice thickness probe (E19) and/or water level probe (E20) fails. The LCD flashes an alert, the board exits automatically if a normal sensor signal returns, and after 72 hours it enters standby and turns off; a five-cycle history is required or the machine shuts off.

Symptoms

  • E31 shown while the machine still makes some ice
  • Reduced production or altered cycle behavior
  • Another fault code present in the event log

Common causes

  • A prior fault (sensor, refrigeration or control) pushed the board into its fallback strategy

Diagnostic steps

  1. 01

    Read the event log

Identify the fault that preceded Safe Mode — that code is the real work order.

  2. 02

    Diagnose the underlying code

Follow that code's diagnostic path; Safe Mode itself is only the symptom of the board compensating.

  3. 03

    Clear and verify

After the root cause is fixed, confirm the machine returns to normal cycles and Safe Mode does not re-engage.

When to call a professional

Control-board, sensor-circuit and wiring diagnostics involve live-voltage measurement on a commercial appliance. If you are not trained for live electrical work with the proper meter and PPE, or the fault persists after the checks here, have a qualified commercial ice-machine technician complete the diagnosis before parts are replaced.
